Théophile Gautier, Le capitaine Fracasse, Paris, Flammarion, 1971. A poor nobleman seems antithetical. And yet the Baron de Sigognac wanders around his ruined castle. It's only when he comes into contact with a merry band of comedians that he decides to get on with his life. And who knows? Maybe he'll find love. But this story will surely not be to everyone's taste... This cloak-and-dagger novel, written by an author who needs no introduction, is a marvellous representation of his genre, with perfectly balanced humour and sensitivity.

This novel is more than a detective story. It is also a highly realistic novel of love and friendship. It is a novel of mise en abîme, where we discover the book in the making. Marcus Goldman is a writer lacking inspiration after his first novel, which was a great literary success in the United States. While visiting a great friend who is also a writer at a literary retreat, he discovers that the latter is in love with a young girl who has been missing for 33 years. The problem was that Harry Quebert was 34 and the girl 15 at the time. A few weeks later, the girl's body was found in Harry's garden and he was arrested by the police. The case received a great deal of media coverage, given the events that had marked America and Harry's popularity as a writer. Marcus decides to return to New Hampshire to prove his friend's innocence. But this quest for the truth is not to everyone's taste in the town of Aurora, New Hampshire. This is an addictive novel that is impossible to put down. We become this writer in search of the truth.
Highlights:
-An addictive book.
-Packed with twists and turns, throughout the book.
-Endearing characters.
-A quest for truth, and for writing.
-A work that has been adapted into a TV series, starring Patrick Dempsey, released in 2018.
Press release
On Friday 15 December, Alice Renard will be signing her first book, La Colère et l'Envie, published by Héloïse d'Ormesson. Alice is a 21-year-old author who studied medieval literature at the Sorbonne. Her poignant first book leaves us breathless when we meet the child Isor, who doesn't speak but expresses a lot. We invite you all to the Étincelle bookshop in Angers, 65 rue Beaurepaire. This session will start at 4.00 pm. There will also be an opportunity for us all to talk to Alice Renard about childhood disorders and how to write about them to raise awareness of these issues.

David Foenkinos, Je vais mieux, Paris, Gallimard, 2018 David Foenkinos, as usual, transports us into the world of his character, a world in which Antoine Duris is lost. This touching character sweeps us along with him as he flees, and we follow him in his flight, without really knowing why. From a superb career, he becomes a museum guard, melancholy, and so are we. Little by little, the story becomes clearer. What happened to make him leave like that? Life itself.
